Apple, Google Commit to Address UK App Store Fairness Concerns
According to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), the commitments are designed to improve app review procedures and ranking systems for third-party developers. Last year, the CMA concluded that the two companies hold an “effective duopoly,” giving them an unfair advantage over other app makers.
As part of the agreement, Apple will allow developers to request interoperable access to features and functionality within its operating system. Both companies have also pledged to prevent the use of non-public data from competing apps to benefit their own services.
The CMA expects the commitments to take formal effect on April 1, 2026, and has warned that it will introduce formal conduct requirements if the measures are not properly implemented.
The regulator said the new steps are intended to strengthen the UK app economy by encouraging investment and innovation. This represents the CMA’s first major enforcement action under its new digital markets competition framework.
